Founded in 1949, the Maryland Mortgage Bankers Association (MMBA) recently merged with the Maryland Association of Mortgage Professionals (MAMP). We are an organization committed to helping its members conduct business and ensuring the continued strength of the real estate finance industry and mortgage lending field. We possess a steadfast dedication to promote ethical business practices and integrity-based lending. We continually strive to help our members provide superior financial loan services to residents of Maryland and expand homeownership statewide.
On an on-going basis, the association provides our members with useful and informative continuing education programs, workshops, conferences and seminars to help them grow in their careers. We serve as an advocate for the mortgage banking industry, constantly staying abreast of key legislative and regulatory issues at the state and local levels while representing the interests of our members. We have retained a professional lobbyist skilled in the legislative process who works diligently in Annapolis on your behalf.

In addition, membership in the MMBBA offers mortgage bankers across the state of Maryland an important network of contacts to help members gain insight and comradery among industry leaders that also share their experiences and challenges. Luncheon meetings and social events allow members a needed forum for the discussion of key issues as well as professional growth and development. We also provide our members with vital information about the tools and trends they need to be successful and advance their business objectives.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MARYLAND ASSOCIATION OF MORTGAGE PROFESSIONALS
In February of 1992, Maryland mortgage brokers that were members of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (“NAMB”) were invited to an organizational meeting to discuss the formation of a State of Maryland brokers association. The NAMB president, Diane Kelly, wanted the first president of MAMB to be a broker who primarily did “A Paper” mortgages. During the meeting, she kept referring to Margie Hofberg; so, by the end of the meeting, it was assumed that Margie was going to be heading up the effort. The following month officers of the new organization were selected:

A group of brokers from that meeting, along with some wholesale lender representatives, formed the founding board of the Maryland Association of Mortgage Brokers (“MAMB”). On March 24, 1992, the association was incorporated in Maryland as a not-for-profit corporation.
In its first year, the organization wanted to accomplish two things. First, to establish a warm and supportive relationship with the Maryland State Commissioner of Consumer Credit, Alan T. Fell, and the Assistant Attorney General, J. Steven Lovejoy. The Commissioner was thrilled to have an organized group to work with. Those were the days when mortgage brokering was like the Wild West! Both Commissioner Fell and Steve Lovejoy came to MAMB events and added legitimacy to the newborn organization. Second, MAMB officers and board members planned a conference and trade show to bring together and educate mortgage brokers. The first of many annual conferences was held in Baltimore in January of 1993. There were over 60 exhibitors, hundreds of attendees, and it was profitable.
In early 1995, the Association engaged the former Consumer Credit Commissioner, Alan Fell, as its first registered lobbyist in Annapolis. At the same time, the officers of the Association bought in a professional management company. That began the long relationship MAMB had with Tom Shaner and his staff at The Joseph E. Shaner Company.
MAMP provided many small mortgage brokerages with the opportunity to meet and network with other brokers to share information and sharpen skillsets, an outlet they did not have prior to the formation of the MAMB. Many members have attributed a portion of their success as mortgage brokers to the access to resources MAMB provided them.
In November of 2009, the organization officially changed its name to Maryland Association of Mortgage Professionals, Inc. – to better reflect the fact that its members included not just mortgage brokers; but also small mortgage companies and others who were part of the mortgage lending community.
In December of 2016, the MAMP agreed to merge with and into the Maryland Mortgage Bankers Association (MMBA). Both organizations recognized there were by that time very few differences between the missions of the two Associations, and that by combining forces, they could have a more effective voice in Annapolis and a stronger organization. The name chosen for the combined organizations was the MARYLAND MORTGAGE BANKERS AND BROKERS ASSOCIATION (MMBBA).

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MARYLAND MORTGAGE BANKERS ASSOCIATION
On January 14, 1940, the Baltimore Sun reported that an announcement was made of the organization of the Baltimore Mortgage Bankers Association; to be headed by Guy T. 0. Hollyday of the Baltimore office of Randall H. Hagner & Co. The association was the 24th local mortgage organization to be affiliated with the national Mortgage Bankers Association of America. (Mr. Hollyday was a member of the board of governors of the national association and, in the 1950’s, was head of the Federal Housing Administration.) Other officers of the new organization included Carroll Wright, of the White-Mowbray Company, vice-president; James W. Rouse, president of the Moss-Rouse Company, secretary-treasurer. Other members initially included Walter C. Pinkard of Moss-Rouse Company; Hugh F. Watts of the Title Guarantee and Trust Company, and Henry P. Irr.
Unfortunately, and presumably because of World War II, when most able-bodied men went off to war, there is no record of another president of the Baltimore MBA until 1946, when James W. Rouse was elected president. A succession of Baltimore-area executives led the association (see the MMBA Past President List on our website). The association facilitated the exchange of ideas among members and continued to be an active advocate for the mortgage profession by lobbying the state legislature and executive branch; as well as local governments as the need arose. For many years, the Association has engaged the services of a professional lobbyist to assist and guide our lobbying efforts. We have also been fortunate to have the services of a pro-bono attorney to assist with legal matters.
In 1973, the Association changed its name to the Maryland Mortgage Bankers Association, Inc. (MMBA), and incorporated for the first time. The new organization represented all Maryland mortgage lenders except those in Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties, which were represented by the Metropolitan Washington Mortgage Bankers Association.
In 1990, the MMBA elected its first female president. In the summer of 2002, the MMBA entered the digital age, launching its first website.
In December of 2016, the MMBA agreed that the Maryland Association of Mortgage Professionals (MAMP), the organization representing mortgage brokers, would be merged with and into the MMBA. Both organizations recognized there were now very few differences between the mission of the two Associations and that by combining forces, they could have a more effective voice in Annapolis and a stronger organization. The name chosen for the combined organizations is the MARYLAND MORTGAGE BANKERS AND BROKERS ASSOCIATION (MMBBA).
